What is SaaS?

With Software as a Service, or SaaS for short, an application is not used locally by the user, but from the cloud. The application is used via an internet connection and is usually realised via a web browser. The service user pays a usage fee for the use and operation of the application. The SaaS model saves the service user the acquisition and operating costs. In addition, the provider takes over maintenance work as well as hardware and software updates.

 

When does SaaS make sense?

Building and operating an IT infrastructure to run complex software can be an expensive and risky investment and is usually supplemented with an additional maintenance contract. With the SaaS model, these investments are not necessary and make the operation of the software more cost-effective. Nevertheless, a lot of expertise is needed to develop a suitable SaaS solution.
